Episode 1 - Leah & Stitch
I am always trying to find unique ways to collaborate and share the love with some of my favourite small businesses, so I figured - what better way than to feature them on the DDG blog? The very first guest to kick things off will be my good friend Leah, of Leah & Stitch
! Leah & Stitch was born out of opportunity when Leah was laid off from her engineering job in 2016 and it has now become a flourishing creative outlet and growing business! I think in this current (and sometimes bleak) pandemic situation, this is something we can all draw a ton of inspiration from. Talk about making some kick-ass artisanal lemonade with those lemons! So, without further ado, I will turn this post over to Leah to give you a bit of background info behind Leah & Stitch!
Hello DogDog Goose fans!
I am Leah, the maker, crocheter/knitter and designer behind Leah & Stitch. I live in St. Albert with my Husband and our two dogs. I am excited to be on the DogDog Goose blog to let you know a little bit more about Leah & Stitch and of course the dogs behind the business!
How did you get started?
I have been crocheting and knitting for almost 10 years. My Grandma taught me how to knit and crochet and I started off my maker journey making gifts for friends and family. I had always wanted to start up an Etsy page for my items but never found the time to get it going. In 2016 I was laid off from my engineering job and found myself with an abundance of time on my hands and Leah & Stitch was started.
How did you come up with the name for your business?
One of the hardest parts of starting Leah & Stitch was coming up with a name. I started brainstorming ideas but nothing felt quite right. I was asking family and friends to help out with ideas, which is when my Husband suggested Leah & Stitch, and I knew it would be the perfect fit!
What is your favourite product to make?
One of my favorite products to make right now is the double brim toque. The fold over brim adds that extra bit of warmth to the toque that we need in our Canadian winters.
What is your bestseller?
I don’t know if a best-selling item can be a colour, but it’s the Hudson Bay colourway. No matter what I make with this colour, toque, scarf, mitts you name it, everyone loves it!
Where can people buy your product?
You can find my products online at www.leahandstitch.ca
, or on my Etsy shop. The Makers Keep & Urban Whyte carry a selection of my items as well.
What are some of your future plans? Upcoming product releases?
I have lots of new pattern designs in the works! One of which is a fair isle toque pattern, which means my fall/winter 2020 line will have some beautiful new toques!
What are some of the philosophies of or inspirations for your business?
I love designing and creating new things, if I wouldn’t wear it or don’t think it's comfortable, you wont find it my line up of products or designs. I think that as Canadians we spend so much time in our winter jackets, and let's face it yours is probably grey or black! So I want to create pieces that will be able to dress up our boring winter wardrobes with a pop of colour!
The Dogs behind Leah & Stitch
Hoban is an eight year old Collie Cross. He loves going on walks, chasing birds in the back yard and getting all the belly rubs! Some of Hoban’s favorite treats include carrots, cucumbers, and of course DDG bully sticks! Hoban was rescued by HART (Human Animal Rescue Team). He had a bit of a rough start to life but has come such a long way from when he first came into our lives. Especially after his little brother Wicket joined our family. Wicket has brought Hoban out of his shell! Hoban thinks that whenever I decide to take pictures for Leah & Stitch, he needs to be included, so you will often see him posing for pictures over on my Instagram page!
What is Hoban’s favourite DDG product?
Hoban’s favorite DDG products would be a tie between the bandanas and bully sticks! He always looks so proud of himself whenever we put on one of his bandanas. But you can’t leave out the bully sticks.
Wicket is a four year old Border Collie. He is definitely a typical Border Collie and loves to keep busy! He is extremely smart, loves playing fetch, catching frisbees and knowing what everyone is doing at all times! Wicket does like treats, but if he had to choose between getting a treat and playing fetch, fetch would win every single time!
What is Wicket’s favourite DDG product?
Wickets favorite DDG product would have to be his biothane leash, because whenever he sees that come out he knows there will be a car ride or walk to go on! Plus he can’t wait for there to be DDG harnesses to match his leash, or wait maybe that’s just me!
Thank you for spending the time to get to know a bit more about my business and the dogs behind it! As well a great big thank you to Lauren for having me on the blog!
